Courtesy photoYou know the tired clichà ©. Death, taxes, and The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania topping the U.S. News ranking of undergraduate business programs. For nearly the entirety of the past decade, Whartons undergraduate business program has topped the U.S. Newss ranking of undergraduate business programs. Essentially a popularity contest, the ranking is based solely on responses from deans and senior faculty members through a one-to-five scaled peer assessment survey. The U.S. News takes the average one-to-five score, combines it with each schools score from the previous year, and puts out the ranking.Whartons reputation score of 4.8 (again, on the five-point scale) was better than all other schools. And once again, MITs Sloan School of Management followed with a 4.7. There was one slight change compared to last year in that the University of California-Berkeleys Haas School slipped one spot to a tie for third with the University of Michigans Ross School of Business. This, however, was the exact same placement the schools had two years ago. Carnegie Mellon Universitys Tepper School and the University of Texas McCombs School each climbed one spot to share a three-way tie for fifth place with New York Universitys Stern School.There wasnt any change for the rest of this years top ten. The University of North Carolinas Kenan-Flagler Business School tied for eighth again with the University of Virginias McIntire School and Cornell University and Indiana University both tied for 10th. The University of Notre Dame and University of Southern California both slipped two spots from 10th last year to 12th this year. Meanwhile, Washington University in St. Louis climbed two spots to share the 12th spot with Notre Da me and USC.THIS YEARS TOP WINNERS AND LOSERSScores were generally better this year compared to last year, which could suggest a more favorable reputation of business schools among their peers. While Whartons 4.8 was the same as last year, MIT Sloans score increased one point from 4.6 to 4.7. Michigan also climbed a tenth of a point from 4.5 to 4.6. Overall last year, 14 schools had a score of 4.0 or higher. This year, that number climbed to 18.While there wasnt much shuffling among the top-10 schools, there was significant movement further down the list. The University of Wisconsin climbed three spots, landing back in the top 15 after dropping three spots to 18th last year. After dropping six spots to 30th place last year, the University of Florida boomeranged eight spots, up to 22nd this year. Texas AM University also continues its recent ascent, also climbing eight spots from 30th to 22nd — up nine spots from two years ago.Within the top 75, Rutgers Business School in New B runswick and Clemson University in South Carolina had the largest climbs this year, each climbing 13 places to 66th place. A slew of schools had climbs of 12 places including the University of Tennessee, University of Oklahoma, University of Connecticut, Northeastern University, and Bentley University, all of which went from 62nd to 50th.At the other end, the Air Force Academy outside of Colorado Springs plummeted 22 spots to 66th place. Temple University had a 17-position drop for the second year in a row. After placing 45th two years ago, the school, which was kicked out of the U.S. News Online MBA ranking for falsifying data, is now in 79th place. This years ranking also wasnt great for Texas Christian University and Loyola Marymount University — both of which dropped 21 spots to 90th place this year.All of this should be taken with a grain of salt, however. While TCU and Loyola Marymount both dropped 21 spots, their actual raw score of 3.1 didnt change, meaning schools co uld actually perform as well as they have in years past, but drop positions based on other schools earning better grades from their peers. With this distorted perception of beauty many people have become unsatisfied with themselves. This persistent image of what you should look like can lead to poor physical and mental health. With people becoming insecure with their body image things like low self-esteem, depression, eating disorders, and even suicide can occur. We see that the revenue of the company has gone up from $60,181million to $62,447million from 2014 to 2015. The major source of increase of revenue has come from sale of goods which is due to increase in operating activities. Also we can see that last years net profit was $ 2689 million and this years net profit is $ 2440 million, even though revenue has increased net profit has dropped, this is due to the reason that in the year 2014 company earned a profit of $1179 million which was earned from discontinued operations. Overall we see an increase in net profits of the company from continuing operations (Horngreen, 2013). Moving to the balance sheet we find that there are no major variances. Mostly there has been a negative variance in the currents assets of the company by $238 million, which is mainly due to decrease in cash and deposit balances with bank. Also we can witness an increase of $893 million which is due to increase in intangible assets machineries and goodwill of the company. The total liabilities of the company have also increased due to increase in operations of the company (Brealey et. al, 2011). The net income of the company has also showed a similar trend. Similar is the state of balance sheet of the company. The current assets of the company have shown a little movement of $554.8 million, the major reason of which is increase in cash balances of the company (Northington, 2011). Also the non-current assets of the company have increased from $17030.4million to $17675.9million due to increase in investing activities of the company. There has been a huge movement of fund from non-current liabilities to current liabilities, which is due to increased short term borrowings of the company and decreased long term borrowings. Comparison of the Ratios Profitability Ratio Return on Assets ratio The return on total assets for Wesfarmers declined in the year 2015 as compared to 2014 indicating the assets were not used in an optimum manner (Albrecht et. al, 2011). It has dropped in the year 2015. On the other hand the same has been witnessed for Woolsworth where the return on total assets has dropped indicating that the assets was not utilized properly. However, the drop in Wesfarmers is less. Net profit margin - The net profit margin of both the companies dropped marginally and can be attributed to the difference in the sales factor. The external factors were mainly responsible for it and competition from others. Liquidity Ratios From the computation it has observed that the current as well as acid test ratio has fallen for Wesfarmers and in both the division it fails to be near the ideal ratio indicating that the company will face difficulty in meeting the obligations. The same has been noticed for Woolsworth where the current and the liquid ratio has dropped. Though the drop in current ratio is marginal but it is indicated that the company will face problems in meeting the obligations (Williams, 2012). Capital Structure From the comparison it is seen hat the debt equity of Wesfarmers has increased marginally but is less than .50 indicating that the company utilizes a balance between equity and debt. The equity ratio of the company is properly balanced and hence, is ideal for the company. However, in the case of Woolsworth, the debt equity is more than .50 and equity ratio is low indicating higher proportion of debt for the company (Parrino et. al, 2012). Market Performance Ratio: Earnings per share are the allocation of companys profit to each of its outstanding share. From the above we clearly see that, earnings per share of Wesfarmers Ltd are 216 cents whereas that of Woolsworth limited is 174 cents. The dividend payout ratio of Wesfarmers is approximately 51% and that of Woolsworth limited is 42%. Conclusion From the whole analysis we see that the overall performance of Wesfarmers is better than Woolsworth is most of the cases. But we should keep in mind that even if companies with high payout ratio sometimes do not perform well. The companies should aim at maximizing the shareholders wealth. Thus, total market capitalisation of the company is a major part which shows the market performance of a company. Therefore, going by the overall analysis it can be said that selection of Wesfarmers is a good bet as the company has good capital structure and market share.
